Late Night Good Night by Georg Óskar: Review
Following his 2021 debut single “Walk on the water” the Oslo-based Icelandic experimental artist and producer Georg Óskar released his debut album “Worst Wait of Our Life” on January 15, 2023. He gives the listeners a first taste of the album with the YouTube exclusive single “Late Night Good Night”
Kicking things off with a murky analog synth bass, the song is his take on love, lust, and cultural decline. To be articulate in its expression, this dark synth-wave EDM number is the first from the artist to feature vocal parts. The pulsating analog bass line over the dark synth melodies creates a hypnotic dark ambiance for the vocals to take the lead of the track. The hypnotic spoken-word style vocals evoke an eerie feeling and it grows more obsessive as the track progresses. This rings true for the instrumental parts as well. As vocals intensify in calm and collected aggression, more layers of noise and synth rhythm and melodies get added to the mix until it all breaks down to a dark apocalyptic onslaught.
The discussion would be incomplete without bringing up the accompanying music video. Perfectly depicting love, lust, and obsession, the dark, glitchy, sexually charged video enhances the listening experience by visually bringing the song together in a compelling fashion. This may be an acquired taste, but anyone with an appreciation of darkwave, glitchwave, and experimental EDM will absolutely love this song.
