“Maybe Next Year” by Fake Dad is a fantastic indie rock song that blends the singer’s high vocals, introspective lyrics, and dynamic instrumentals to create a genuinely impactful musical experience.
The lead singer sings with a high pitch and falsetto, conveying a sense of vulnerability and hopelessness that is complemented and contrasted with the opening verse: “Maybe NextYear/ I will feel a little different/ Maybe Next Year/ I’ll have the life of my dreams,” referring to this year already being lost even though it just began.
The harmonies in the chorus change up when her head voice goes falsetto, soaring in the folds of music. This musical effect is quite voluntary, as the lyrics become more hopeful throughout the music showcasing development in personality because she now sings: “Maybe this year/ I’ll have the life of my dreams/ Maybe this year…” This part is especially powerful, as it allows the stripped-down arrangement to bring out the full force of the lyrics and the singer’s voice. Then the song floats towards the end of the song and we hear an atmospheric play of the guitar, the cymbals, the tambourine, and the synth waves replicating a hallowing voice.
The repeated phrase “Maybe next year” creates a sense of optimism that is both uplifting and cathartic, and the stripped-down arrangement in the bridge section allows the message of the song to shine through with great sincerity. The lyrics themselves are relatable and introspective, exploring themes of regret and missed opportunities while also acknowledging the possibility of a better future.
