Los Angeles-based duo Siren Section, James Cumberland and John Dowling, return with their latest single, “Medicine,” a brooding yet ethereal entry in their self-coined glitchgaze sound. Having spent over two decades merging shoegaze’s dreamy haze with electronic precision and experimental rock grit, the pair have established a whole new aesthetic, where you are getting the futuristic with a side of the fragile. Following their previous single “Glass Cannon,” this track offers another glimpse into their upcoming concept album Separation Team, which promises to explore the emotional dissonance of human connection in a hyper-digital world.
“Medicine” opens with a slow tension of beating drums pulsing like a racing heart, while a low, buzzing guitar broods beneath, thick with anticipation. The soundscape comes with an intoxicating duality that brings the heavy alongside the strangely serene, like standing in the eye of an emotional storm. The vocals drift in softly, tender, exhausted, introspective, as if whispered from the depths of isolation. The singer sounds half-present, suspended above the chaos, giving the sense that he’s seeking relief from something unnameable but ever-present.
As the track builds, the guitar distortion deepens into a gritty, immersive haze that engulfs the listener. Layers of glitchy reverb and warped textures rise like static memories surfacing. This is the buzz in your brain when you try to numb something that can’t be numbed, the futile chase for peace in a disordered world.
“Medicine” is a diagnosis wrapped in noise and beauty. Check out Siren Section’s latest single on Spotify.
