Be prepared to get thrown off by the raw and riveting voice of the singer and songwriter Erin May in the very first second of the song, “Oh Mother.” Their thin, luscious, and high timbre is the standout point of the song, and their range makes us swoon. Erin May’s voice has no limits, and they have successfully shown us what they are capable of in “Oh Mother.”
May sharply intones every word and syllable with their soft, tender tone to emphasize their anguish. Over electronic and classic elements, they deliver their passionate and brutal lyrics: “Mother, I’m petrified/Your youth is up in flames/It’s time to reach inside/And retrieve what remains.” If you haven’t figured it out yet, they are talking to Mother Earth, and they are talking about environmentalism, activism, and veganism.
With synth waves and a dark, echoing piano melody engulfing the background, May sears the front line, reminding us of our “crimes.” “Oh Mother” by Erin May is a heartfelt and emotional track that showcases the singer-songwriter’s raw and powerful vocals. The instrumentation is minimalistic, allowing Erin’s vocals to take center stage and really drive the emotion of the song.
In “Oh Mother,” Erin May’s intense take on how our environmental goodness is slowly depleting due to our very own actions and how we turn a blind eye to the damage we are causing on the planet that is supposed to sustain us for years to come communicates their love for nature and our mother earth. “Oh Mother” is a powerful reminder of the duties we have toward our Provider. And it’s a must-listen in these dark times.
