Los Angeles-based folk/rock singer-songwriter Mara Sol’s sophomore EP, Permanent Recovery, released this October 4, 2024, goes behind self-discovery and recovery through transparent and tender storytelling. John Caviness produced the album, which features co-writer Melanie Medina’s contributions in her backup vocals and strings, except for cello. This EP is structured with five main songs connected by short transitional aesthetic conceptual interludes.
Permanent Recovery begins with a brief 16-second prelude, “Ch. 1 (like all good stories),” setting a relaxing, immersive ambience with nature sounds engulfing it with subtlety.
Opening with chiming guitar melodies and thick, organic beats, “Other Side” features Mara Sol’s soothing, emotive vocals. The song is about supporting a loved one through addiction recovery, expressing the helplessness and quiet strength required when all you can do is be by their side.
The next transition track, “Ch. 2 (we are but layers of moments),” introduces children’s laughter and leads us to reflect on the passage, which the symbolic ballad “Flowers” provides context to. With shimmering acoustic guitars and innocuous gentle backing vocals, the song’s three verses pay homage to different friendships, each represented by a flower.
This lively, upbeat song, “Dreaming to Feel You,” introduces a more vibrant energy as Mara Sol conveys the joy and tenderness of having your partner through your every moment by showing us how it would be not to have them right now.
“Ch. 5 (i choose to embrace the light)” with conscious gentle guitar strums and the sound of water washing over leads to the uplifting, adventurous finale, “Still Breathing.” With an engaging rhythm and Mara Sol’s storytelling vocals, the song emphasizes the power of perseverance in the face of challenges. Harmonies from her sisters towards the end add a soulful and familial touch and transform the song into a powerful ode to recovery, resilience, and the strength found in love and connection.
