Swedish stoner rock trio Repeat’s new album Rat Race is a nonstop, adrenaline-fueled ride through the underbelly of rock. Just six months after their debut, this trio is back with an 18-minute sequel that blends stoner rock, punk, and post-hardcore into a gloriously chaotic masterpiece.
Rat Race opens with “Man On The Moon,” a sonic sledgehammer of gnarly riffs, pummeling drums, and the vocalist’s angsty hollering. Track 3, “Not Enough” brings more intensity and throws gasoline on the fire. The drums splinter like shrapnel, the guitars vibrate with raw desperation and jolt out revving rage.
“Rat Race” has its title track coming with a menacing drum roll before the distorted riffs come crashing in, a monstrous surge of energy packed into a mere 42 seconds. The track leaves seething lowly and sharply and continues to the next track, bringing a sense of continuity. It’s a jolting reminder that life in the fast lane is relentless.
Concluding the breathless and gritty Rat Race is “Wasting My Time” and its catchy hooks. Gnarly riffs graze alongside steady drums over a layer of driving shimmering melodies. The chiming pulses through and creates an exhilaration running in your veins as the singer claims to have been wasting his time with someone on repeat.
Rat Race is a live experience caught on tape. With several shows booked after their Malmö performance, Repeat is here to get you addicted to the rock fervor.
