Reverse by Von LaRae: Review
Coming off of Von LaRae’s debut album The Art of Sex, this song is all about taking back control.
Given the context of the album, the songs are heavily themed on addiction and intimacy. When you feel like you’re not getting what you deserve and being treated poorly, be it in a relationship or any other situation, it’s better to stop, turn around, and walk away. Because you’re better than this. The first thing you’d notice about this song is it’s incredibly catchy with its hook. Von Larae’s rhymes over a swinging beat shifts from singing to rapping to singing again so naturally and effortlessly that the melody sounds almost hypnotic. It’s further amplified by the use of several layers of vocal harmonics and synths backed by deep sub-bass and a groovy mid-bass. The percussion parts sound absolutely tight with the use of both programmed and real drums, especially the hi-hats, and the snares really cut through the mix and give the beat its sparks. The last quarter of the song hides a decent surprise taking a break from the trip-hop sound and shifting to a more trippy psychedelic jazzy tone that sets the mood for the song that follows, the title track of the album. This is definitely one of those songs that the melody gets stuck in your head for days.
