Romance is Bad by Gracie Jean: Review
“Romance is Bad” is filled with 9 soulful melancholy tracks. It’s like having your heart broken into a thousand pieces all in one place; it’s the perfect sad girl playlist.
In “I Don’t Wanna Sing The Blues Anymore,” she describes a positive sonic change in her life, as if the autumn wind were replacing the summer sun. “Little Mountain Home,” is a heartfelt, acoustic ballad about longing and loss that immediately endears itself to listeners. In “Weight Of The World,” when Gracie asks out loud, “Am I Enough?,” she expresses a profound sense of isolation through her words. On the album’s fourth track, “My First Love,” she mixes her delicate voice in an airy composition without any guitar elements. With its bouncy rhythm, “Whatever Goes” is a country song in the vein of Taylor Swift that you’ll find yourself replaying. “Overcome” is a piano work that alters the tempo and key to create an emotionally secure space. In the background of “Forgettable,” a subtle synth emits a sense of finally accepting one’s frailties. Then there’s “Romance Is Bad,” a song about the pain of a breakup that’s softened by Gracie’s soothing vocals. And finally, in “Endings,” violin and guitar harmonize as they play a farewell song.
Gracie Jean is a cross between Taylor Swift, Dolly Parton, and Aurora! With the precision of the Australian singer-songwriter’s alt-country and folk guitar picking and minimalistic use of electronic chords, she captured transient romantic sentiments in her songs, creating inspiring melodies that convey a picture of raw, genuine emotions.
