Nigerian-born, Canada-based artist Dolu returns with Self Conscious, a thoughtful three-track EP that feels less like a musical statement and more like a personal conversation. Formerly known as Uno Denie, Dolu uses this release to explore identity, growth, faith, resilience, and the winding road toward self-acceptance. Rather than chasing flashy trends, Self Conscious thrives on sincerity, blending Afro-influenced hip-hop with reflective lyricism that sounds lived-in and earned.
The EP opens with “Superpowers,” a warm and uplifting track built on shimmering melodies and playful, softly tapping beats. Dolu’s rich voice carries an encouraging tone as he reflects on overcoming setbacks, rejecting self-doubt, and discovering strength from within. Lines about surviving battles, finding purpose, and focusing on family rather than distractions transform the song into an anthem of perseverance. The catchy chorus gives the track an infectious optimism, while the verses balance motivational energy with genuine vulnerability.
Next comes “God Is Love,” perhaps the spiritual heart of the project. Over tender, flowing melodies, Dolu delivers his verses with urgency and conviction, spreading a message of compassion, gratitude, and inner peace. The song pushes back against the pursuit of power, fame, and material excess, instead celebrating love as the ultimate source of freedom. Personal reflections about family, particularly his parents and children, add emotional weight, making the track feel intimate without becoming sentimental. It is thoughtful, heartfelt, and refreshingly hopeful.
The EP closes with “Late Bloomer,” a standout reflection on timing and self-worth. Driven by relaxed production and catchy, rustling rhythms, Dolu embraces the idea that success does not have to arrive on anyone else’s schedule. His lyrics chronicle growth, heartbreak, sobriety, fatherhood, and learning to appreciate the present moment. The repeated refrain about finding purpose and living undefeated leaves a lasting impression.
Across just three songs, Self Conscious delivers a surprisingly complete journey. Honest, mature, and quietly inspiring, Dolu proves that sometimes the most powerful music comes not from making the loudest noise, but from speaking the plain truth.
