“Sixteen” by Pink Skull Garden is a nostalgic, punchy blast of pop-punk energy that throws you straight into the relaxing chaos of growing up. From the moment the hard-hitting drums kick in and the melodic punk-rock guitars explode, you know you’re in for a wild ride. The track is fueled by raw, youthful angst, with frontman Farhan Raza delivering wishful, high-energy vocals that capture the universal longing to rewind time and be sixteen again—before responsibilities, heartbreak, and student loans came crashing in.
There’s something effortlessly cool about the way the song blends early 2000s pop-punk influences (think Blink-182 and Green Day) with a fresh, modern attitude. It’s loud, fast, and perfectly imperfect—just the way pop-punk should be. The guitars and drums are perfectly in sync, creating a tight but reckless energy that makes you want to jump around and scream the lyrics at the top of your lungs. Recorded in a single day at Blake Hobson’s “Sense-2” studio in Charlotte, NC, the track oozes with that raw, unfiltered jam-session magic.
But just when you think “Sixteen” is your typical coming-of-age anthem, it throws a curveball. The song takes a hilariously self-aware turn at the end when the singer breaks down, sobbing that he’s not sixteen anymore—he’s sixteen and a half. And just as you start feeling secondhand embarrassment, someone in the background shouts, “Shut the f*ck up!” It’s a perfect, chaotic ending that encapsulates the humor and honesty of being stuck between youth and adulthood, but you know it’s not even that bad when it’s just “sixteen and a half.” So yeah the scream was well-deserved.
Pink Skull Garden is proving they’re a band to watch, and with their album Superhero Loser on the way, they’re only getting started. If you love punk that doesn’t take itself too seriously but still hits you right in the feels, “Sixteen” is a must-listen.
