Noelle Carroll’s latest single, “Strawberry Skittles,” is a delightful departure from her usual sad music, embracing a fizzy and vibrant atmosphere that captivates listeners from the first note. With its catchy melodies, descriptive lyricism, wispy light voice, and point-blank delivery, the track delineates Noelle’s versatility and ability to explore new sonic territories.
From the opening notes, “Strawberry Skittles” immerses the listener in a world of pastel-pink and effervescent soundscapes. In Noelle’s words, the production captures the essence of a shaken can of Fanta being opened, exuding a sense of playful excitement. It’s a refreshing, fruity, summery, and springy change that infuses the track with a sense of joy and lightheartedness.
Noelle’s vocals soar effortlessly over the infectious grooves and lively instrumentation of sparkly synths and sharp beats. The lyrics, centered around the sweet and innocent sentiment of saving strawberry Skittles for a loved one, evoke a sense of youthful infatuation and romantic charm.
It was particularly Noelle’s reference to marrying with paper rings, though, that couldn’t help but make me think of Taylor Swift. It can’t be that a woman sings of love at this time and doesn’t think of Taylor Swift at least once. Other than Swift, the touch of Noelle’s other influences like Phoebe Bridges, Billy Joel, and Joni Mitchell can be felt in the song’s thoughtful composition and relatable storytelling.
With its catchy melodies, playful lyrics, and infectious charm, “Strawberry Skittles” by Noelle Carroll is bound to leave a smile on your face and a desire to hit the replay button.
