After earning acclaim for Suneaters IV: Absinthe Makes The Heart Grow Fingers, Suneaters return with an even more ambitious statement in Heroic Dose, a sprawling double album that refuses to sit still for a single moment. Rather than following a neat narrative or stylistic roadmap, the record unfolds like a collection of vivid snapshots—moments of heartbreak, confusion, transcendence, humor, love, and self-destruction scattered across four sides of music. It’s messy, unpredictable, and all the more compelling because of it.
The album thrives on contrasts. One moment feels intimate and bruised, the next expansive and celebratory. Suneaters seem less interested in fitting comfortably into a genre than in documenting emotional states as they occur. The record swings between Americana, progressive rock, R&B, indie rock, and singer-songwriter confessionals without ever feeling forced.
The opening track, “Bedhead,” immediately establishes the album’s introspective side. Built around rumbling, steady drums, the song carries a weight of emotional exhaustion. The vocal performance is deliberately numb and withdrawn, capturing the internal paralysis of anxiety and self-doubt. The tension runs beneath the surface that makes the track linger long after it ends.
Elsewhere, “Big Dancer” shifts the mood entirely. Glistening acoustic guitars provide a bright, inviting backdrop as the singer reflects on a love of dancing while simultaneously poking fun at himself through witty, self-deprecating imagery. It’s playful and surprisingly heartfelt, balancing humor with vulnerability.
Then comes “Boulevard of Joy and Love,” one of the album’s most striking moments. Driven by firm drum hits and a commanding rhythm, the track introduces a female vocalist whose performance adds warmth and emotional depth. The song feels celebratory, offering a welcome burst of light amid the album’s darker corners.
Ambitious, sprawling, and unapologetically human, Heroic Dose proves that sometimes the most rewarding journeys are the ones that refuse to travel in a straight line.
