Tales of A Sad Boy by Love Ghost: EP Review
The latest EP by Love Ghost is a fantastic blend of alt-rock and rap with an emo kick featuring the New York emo rapper Big Boss Mulaa. This 4-track EP is a great example of blending genres done right and pushes the envelope with each song.
Kicking things off, ‘Heartless’ is a classic 2003 emo anthem with a fresh 2023 kick of deep bass and trap beats. The song depicts the loneliness that arises from the trauma of being in an abusive relationship.
The EP takes a turn to a more grungy sound in the following song ‘Lathergic’. Starting with a Nirvana-inspired acoustic guitar the song sings about being stuck at one point in life where things look all right from the outside but only you know the hurt you’re going through. The song has a hypnotizing hook.
The band brings back the trap beats infused pop-punk sound with the song ‘Samurai’. With an undertone of betrayal and overcoming your monsters and becoming a warrior like the Samurai, the song grows in intensity as it progresses. Finnegan Bell’s cathartic vocals awake the warrior in you to fight off your demons.
Continuing on the theme of trauma, the EP concludes with the heartfelt number ‘Train Tracks’. Starting off slow, the track progresses to an epic breakdown that makes you wanna “party with your demons”.
Overall, the EP is a perfect example of mixing elements of alt-rock, pop-punk, and hiphop/rap done right. Having a nostalgic sound with a fresh spin, the band Love Ghost is definitely a noteworthy name in this new pop-punk movement.
