The Train Goes On by Sofia Dragt: Review
Sofia Dragt puts the passage of time in her soulful ethereal song The Train Goes On. This is the sixth song of her concept album ISA and followed by the closing instrumental song Isa’s Reflection.
Written in the Westfjords during her stay in Iceland in October 2021, this song is embalmed with the Icelandic sound that we are so familiar with from the likes of Sigur Ros and Bjorn. The reverbed piano combined with Sofia’s airy singing and vocal melodies creates an ethereal atmosphere similar to the northern lights. The crackles of the wooden snaps and the lo-fi record give the recording character. Some surprise instruments sprinkled here and there all throughout the song is also a nice easter egg.
Quotable lyrics:
“It’s bringing me further than I’ve ever gone
Can’t fight the wind, it’s far too strong
But I move, so I keep moving on
The train goes on
The train goes on
Touching the edge
I don’t even feel the rain
Ready, I’m ready
It’s part of who I am”
Being the last song with actual words in it, lyrically the song bears a significant value. Using train as a metaphor for life she sings about how time passes by and life goes on. In this passage of time she also sings about solitude, self-reflection, and acceptance– being ready for come whatever may. The whole album including this amazing song was written, composed, recorde,d and produced by Sofia Dragt herself. Even as a standalone song the beauty and brilliance of this song cannot be denied.
