Jake Vera’s latest single, “Time,” released July 1st, barrels in like a chaotic and cathartic thunderstorm over a desert. Anchored in the upcoming EP A Lost Soul, this alt-rock scorcher takes the angst of early 2000s greats and pushes it against our contemporary stressors.
The drums hit like war drums in a battlefield of regret, and the guitars gnarl, twist, and howl like they’re clawing out of some inner purgatory. Vera’s voice bleeds, especially as he pleads, “Turn back time / So I can find, the essence of my life.” The chorus soars with cinematic drama, and there’s a frantic heartbeat pulsing beneath every line, especially when he belts, “Please just give me more time / You can’t just pass me by.” It’s like his desperation is pouring over the cup.
And let’s not sleep on the production. With reactance at the helm and Sefi Carmel—whose resume includes Bowie and Bruno Mars—on the mixing board, “Time” becomes a layered, high-octane experience. Despite all that work done, the intuitive fire never gets buried. This track is begging for a live performance under flickering strobe lights and screaming fans.
Sure, it’s heavy, even a bit doomy, but there’s hope in the cracks. Vera claws at the ticking clock. So if your playlist is craving something that cuts deep and hits hard, Jake Vera’s “Time” should be on repeat. Check it out on Spotify.
