B.D. Gottfried goes over all the hardships we face in our puny ephemeral lives in his latest masterpiece, Ghosts & Girls.
Produced and co-written with the Juno-Award winner Siegfried Meier, this album dives headfirst into the turbulent waters of humanity across time.
“Butcher, Baker, Little Bombmaker,” enchants with its ethereal intro like a daylight haze, and then the drums enter, beating away amidst distorted guitar fuzz. Gottfried’s voice, soaked in reverb, adds an otherworldly quality to the song, inviting listeners to lose themselves in its haunting beauty.
Moving on to the title track, “Ghosts & Girls,” we’re treated to much mystery and passion. The slow, shimmering music sets a haunting tone before the drums come heaving down hard steadily.
One standout track is the single “Two Worlds,” for going back in time, reflecting the violent clash between the Spanish Conquistadors and the indigenous peoples of Mesoamerica with driving and grazing guitars. The thumping drums provide momentum to the intensity as Gottfried’s vocals get gnarled and tense, telling this historical moment with passion.
“Live, Fight & Die,” cranks up the intensity with its distorted buzzing guitar riffs grinding through with energy. The drums beat on contagiously, and Gottfried’s voice cuts through the chaos like a beacon of raw emotion.
And finally, we come to the last track, “Wrapped in Still Silence.” With its melancholic melody and impassioned vocals, this song is the perfect finale to the album. Gottfried pours his heart and soul into every note, his voice trembling with emotion as his voice surges in the bridge.
Listen to Ghosts & Girls by B.D. Gottfried to feel all you need to feel the rocky roads of life with all their romanticized beauty.
