Liverpool singer-songwriter Paul Claxton’s latest single, “Viola,” is a captivating and timeless piece of music that harkens back to classic music. This heartfelt ballad, recorded at Buffalo Studios, is a beautiful blend of 60’s pop and soul and Americana, reminiscent of classic artists like Carol King, Fleetwood Mac, and Dusty Springfield.
“Viola” opens with an acoustic guitar that relaxingly strums over soft, steady beats, setting a reflective and contemplative tone. Claxton has an enigmatic falsetto and he sings with a ghostly but ethereal tone and emotional appeal. His voice has such an intriguing range, that it goes from lulling highs to thick, emotive depths.
His delivery is both haunting and beautiful, and the lyrics are deeply personal and relatable.
He sings, his voice soaring with agony, “This is getting dangerous, there’s no going back/You have changed this forever” over the relaxing tunes.
The instrumentation is impeccable, with Claxton’s impeccable musicianship shining through on the acoustic guitar, bass, and vocals. The addition of Hammond organ, Dobros, piano and vintage-style drums adds to the song’s nostalgic and timeless feel. Altogether, the music makes you feel as though you are stranded in the middle of a forest, with the leaves sparkling under the sun, yet heavy in its setting.
Claxton’s enigmatic persona has seen grand stages as he has supported numerous legendary artists throughout his career, including Robert Plant, Ultravox, and 10CC.
