Horsebread’s heartfelt latest single, “cant,” is a poignant and introspective exploration of lost hope and disillusionment. The duo, Sam McLeod and Andrew Frazier creates a beautiful and haunting atmosphere that is both captivating and thought-provoking.
“cant: opens with soft strumming guitars, warmly creating a touching, contemplative atmosphere. Produced by McLeod, who’s also on vocals and guitar and arranged by Frazier, also on bass and keys, the song is simple yet effective, allowing the vocals and lyrics to take center stage.
Sam McLeod’s youthful, touching, thick and soft vocals are full of emotion, as he sings about feeling lost and alone. He sings, “I have been waiting all night for you to hold my hand.” His voice raises to a luscious molten high and increases the emotional value of the song as he soars.
Midway, the song gets immersive with an engulfing haunt rising, and McLeod’s voice grows agonized. The chorus, “You don’t believe in me/Don’t believe in anything anymore,” is particularly powerful albeit simple and straightforward, capturing the sense of despair and hopelessness that the song explores.
“cant” is a must-listen for fans of indie folk and anyone who appreciates a well-crafted and emotionally resonant song. The song evokes this message of hope and resilience while providing a shoulder to the misery we share in today’s world, which is why it is sure to stay with you in your most downtrodden moments.
Anyone who loves Radiohead, Sufjan Stevens and Sigur Ros will find something to hold on to in “cant” by horsebread.
