Antoine Loemba released a new track ‘The Fruit’
Nights & Days, a turbulent indie jazz album by drummer-composer Antoine Loemba, explores the spirituality and life’s seasons through the eyes of a young adult. The Frenchman, 24, wants to use instrumental compositions in his brand-new solo project to portray his spiritual journey through the depths of his Christian faith, his struggles with chronic illnesses, and the joys and challenges of growing up.
Antoine Loemba’s self-produced debut EP “Nights & Days” (out August 19th) gives a taste of a universe that ambitiously matches authenticity with complexity, vulnerable melodies with off-the-charts rhythms, simplicity with intensity; taking full advantage of today’s jazz’s openness and versatility to switch between genres, proudly displaying his funk and indie-rock background (“The Fruit”, “Nights & Days”). Loemba was inspired by Your jazz storyteller of today. The insane grooves from James Brown’s “Funky Drummer” by Clyde Stubblefield served as a major inspiration for the album’s opening track, “The Fruit.” The airy and looping piano and funky, compact drum and bass beats almost make this the ideal classic hip-hop track for rappers to freestyle on. The EP’s third and fourth tracks are “Nights” and “Days,” which are also their namesakes.
These two brief songs couldn’t be further apart: “Days” is a crazy 9/8 piece that is bright and intense, while “Nights” is a soft and dark piano and guitar ternary balade. But in spite of this stark contrast, they tenderly come together to begin the fourth song, “Mighty.” The final track combines the chaotic time signatures and energy of “Days” with the dark, guitar-heavy atmosphere of “Nights” into a potent, if not epic, 3’40” jazz-rock anthem.
