Kamila Csenge’s debut album Behind the Universe is an ambitious instrumental jazz journey that reaches far beyond technical brilliance. A Czech guitarist, composer, and Berklee College of Music graduate who earned summa cum laude honors and the prestigious John LaPorta Award, Csenge channels her impressive musical pedigree into a record driven by imagination as much as musicianship. Drawing inspiration from jazz luminaries such as Pat Metheny, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Jim Hall, Billy Childs, and Chick Corea, she crafts a collection that explores the unknown—both in the cosmos and within ourselves. Rich harmonies, shifting meters, and thoughtful compositions invite listeners to venture beyond fear, pain, and certainty into spaces where transformation quietly unfolds.
The album opens with “The Void,” immediately setting an introspective tone. Nuanced guitar plucks and delicate melodic chimes float over softly rustling percussion, creating an atmosphere that feels suspended between stillness and motion. The piece gradually evolves from contemplative darkness toward gentle optimism, mirroring the emotional journey from emptiness to renewed possibility.
Elsewhere, “Against the Wall” reflects perseverance in the face of resistance, translating struggle into dynamic jazz fusion without sacrificing melodic warmth. “Music Forever” shifts the focus toward the enduring power of music itself, quietly challenging the commercialization of art while celebrating creativity that outlives trends. Then comes “Guardians of the Garden,” one of the album’s most evocative moments. Heavy, tumbling rhythms blend with warm, moody melodies and crisp, rustling percussion, creating a mysterious, low-key atmosphere that feels almost cinematic. The composition suggests silent guardians watching over fragile beauty hidden beneath layers of darkness.
The emotional arc continues through “The Metamorphosis,” where fearless transformation takes center stage, before “This World” offers one of the album’s most compassionate statements. Its interplay between major and minor tonalities beautifully reflects humanity’s coexistence of sorrow and hope, reminding listeners that healing often begins through shared understanding.
Finally, “The Point of No Return” closes the album with bustling rhythms, restless percussion, and moody melodic lines that pulse with determination. The sense of forward momentum is undeniable, capturing the irreversible nature of life’s defining decisions.
Supported by an exceptional ensemble featuring Yamirah Gercke, Kateřina Vacková, and Ivo Hermanovský, Behind the Universe balances sophisticated jazz craftsmanship with emotional storytelling. Kamila Csenge creates an immersive, reflective, adventurous, and intimate listening experience that leaves listeners looking both inward and toward the stars.
