Although two of the three members, Ryan and K Hover, have been busy with their project Sound Of Ceres, the Denver dream-pop group Candy Claws hasn’t released any new music since 2015. However, Candy Claws are currently preparing to reissue their final album, 2013, Ceres & Calypso In The Deep Time, in celebration of its 10th anniversary. The bonus track on that reissue, “Distortion Spear,” is the first new Candy Claws song in a full ten years.
A woozy, pretty shoegaze track called “Distortion Spear” has overlapping vocals that have been processed to the point where they almost sound alien. Over the years, many bands have experimented with woozy sounds, but none of them have managed to capture the peculiar glitchy wistfulness that Candy Claws did, so it’s cool to hear them back at it. Hank Bertholf reunites with Ryan and K Hover for the song.
