Cleo Handler released tuneful new song ‘Problem’
What you gain when everything seems lost is what ‘Gold’ is all about. But hopefully it’s also mildly entertaining. It’s a breakup album, so of course the unpolished production, open storytelling, and intensely private lyrics explore loss of love, community, reality, and even your idea of yourself.
Cleo Handler, a native of Los Angeles and a longtime participant in the Advanced BMI Songwriting Workshop, recently relocated to Brooklyn after recording gold with Claire Morison at Wild Horizon Sound in West Hollywood (alongside musicians Sarsten Noice and Mike DeLuccia).
These songs are about self-actualization, empowerment, and finding a reason to live, as well as the bravery to hope, sing, and even laugh, even in the most difficult circumstances. Musically, gold is influenced by well-known musicians like Liz Phair and Wet Leg, paying homage to the sass and wit of Olivia Rodrigo and Hole. ‘Problem’ is about power reclaiming, reassessing what you’ve been told, and projecting. The three lyric videos she produced visually explore “home movie”-inspired themes of nostalgia, reflection, and playfulness.
