Mermaid Avenue depicts a tragic tale of a love long lost and a heart beaten by a lover with heartwarming high vocals sung frustratingly in his newest release, โEmbers of Fires Gone.โ The country-rock track merges with indie-rock and embraces an Americana undertone simultaneously.
The drumming and the percussion splash extensively around the song as the guitar play focuses on keeping the song grounded in country tunes. The lap steel passes the melodies between the instrumentals, emphasizing and earthing out the confused state of emotions once reeling to the embers, once burned out from its licks, and then healing from the entirety of it.
And all of this is presented in a diaristic structure, emanating a nonchalance and diaristic vibe to the music. The ragged high vocals do much justice to the tremendous pain of the lyrical and musical composition by representing vulnerability in a โshow, not tellโ way.
The emotive pathos the vocals pursue is further enhanced by the lyrics, which infer the emotional chaos of the heartbreak featuring a slow death to the heartโs fire while showcasing the peace that comes after it with the realization, โCause you never loved me then/Shows how you want me now/We are fading out like a million songs/The Embers of Fires Gone.โ
Mermaid Avenue couldnโt have shown us the intensity of suffering better than in โEmbers of Fires Gone.โ The intensity is further heightened by the driving instrumental rhythm, which substantiates the pull within the story.
To experience masterful storytelling within musical confines, listen to โTEmbers of Fires Goneโ by Mermaid Avenue.
