1. Can you tell us a bit about where you came from and how it all got started?
KATIE BELLE: Hi! My name is Katie Belle. I’m a 23-year-old pop artist from Atlanta, GA. I started music at a young age when I fell in love with Hannah Montana ( Miley Cyrus) I was already in dance and acting so it seemed a likely addition- Music!. By the time I was 15 I was traveling to Nashville to write songs and record them! I’ve been doing pop music for 5 years. I just released my latest single “The Best You’ll Ever Have” streaming now on Spotify and all platforms.
2. Did you have any training or are you self-taught?
KATIE BELLE: I was in and out of vocal lessons as a kid just to learn technique , I also had a vocal coach when I first started recording, but now I self-train just based off of what I’ve learned through the years. I also am a runner and that helps keep my lungs in shape!
3. What do you feel are the key elements in your music that should resonate with listeners, and how would you personally describe your sound?
KATIE BELLE: I want them to feel like they’re listening to a singer songwriter in the lyrics but a dance track sonically. Something that’s thought provoking and emotional, yet makes you never want to stop moving. I describe my sound as dark ( emotive) dance pop.
4. Who were your first and strongest musical influences and why the name “Katie Belle”?
KATIE BELLE: Stevie Nicks, Miley Cyrus and Flume. As far as my name; I want to keep things authentic because that’s just what feels genuine to me. Katie Belle is my birth name; Katie Belle is my stage name.
5. What’s you view on the role and function of music as a political, cultural, spiritual and social vehicles – and do you try and affront these themes in your work, or are you purely interested in music as an expression of personal narrative and entertainment?
KATIE BELLE: I think music is a beautiful tool to speak on political, cultural and social indifferences. I immensely commend the artists that so bravely speak their minds on the things that matter and that they believe in through music and on social media. I’m working on writing more like that myself, and finding the confidence to be honest about a lot more than just relationships and what’s going on not just in my world. My goal as a human and artist is to always dig deeper.
6. With social media having a heavy impact on our lives and the music industry, how do you handle criticism, haters, naysayers in general?
KATIE BELLE: I ignore it. In a lot of ways, the internet is irrelevant to me, most people on there only have an opinion because other people tell them they should. I am not worried about the words from someone who doesn’t even know me.
7. What has been the most difficult thing you’ve endured in your music career so far?
KATIE BELLE: For me, I think just finding people I can trust. The industry can be seedy and everyone wants to be a part of something big. It’s been hard to find the right support in certain areas of the business, but at the same time being in these positions has taught me so much. I grow more self-sufficient every day.
