Rebecca Sichon’s 2021 Dream Book EP was an adventure into electronic pop and pure pop itself. Originally from Mission in British Columbia’s Fraser Valley, now living in the heart of Vancouver. She showcased on a multitude of stages at Toronto’s Canadian Music Week 2022. Accolades include the 2020 and 2021 Fraser Valley Music Awards as Pop Artist of the Year and the 2022 FVMA R&B artist of the year.
She continued to write and perform while dealing with everything, honing her craft at home, in the studio, and while touring. This led to the creation of numerous new songs, including her soon-to-be-released single TOGETHER and its accompanying music video, that tell poignant tales in her dazzling brand of R&B, Jazz, and Soul.
Rebecca is ready to make her way outside of Western Canada and into the rest of the world. She has a promising recording career ahead of her and is developing a solid live reputation in part due to her endearing, natural stage presence.
“Together” was written about facing her own fears with love and appreciating the beauty of accomplishing things with her partner. It was born out of a late-night, emotional studio session. Together is sure to win over fans of romance, vulnerability, and alluring R&B melodies thanks to an elegant music video that goes along with the release and a well-thought-out promotional strategy. Check out the song and the exclusive interview below:
1. Can you tell us a bit about where you come from and how it all got started?
REBECCA SICHON: I grew up in the small town of Mission, BC in Canada. My father, Boris Sichon is a multi-instrumentalist so I was always surrounded my music and inspired to get in to it from an early age.
2. Did you have any formal training or are you self-taught?
REBECCA SICHON: I was taught classical piano at the age of seven, and took some vocal lessons here and there but I am mainly self-taught.
3. Who were your first and strongest musical influences and why the name ‘REBECCA SICHON’?
REBECCA SICHON: I adored jazz growing up. Ella Fitzgerald, Amy Winehouse are just some of the names I felt the most influenced by, and still do! Rebecca Sichon is my name and I’ve always felt the most connected to it since my music is me!
4. What do you feel are the key elements in your music that should resonate with listeners, and how would you personally describe your sound?
REBECCA SICHON: My music is born from my own emotional state and I hope to connect with listeners on that level. The R&B/Soul-feel and vulnerability are key elements I feel captivate people the most.
5. For most artists, originality is first preceded by a phase of learning and, often, emulating others. What was this like for you? How would you describe your own development as an artist and music maker, and the transition towards your own style, which is known as R&B?
REBECCA SICHON:
Coming from a musical childhood, I grew up listening to a lot of jazz, classical and pop music. When I first began to write, what came out was a mix of the three and I struggled to understand what I was trying to convey. As I’ve gotten older and written nearly a hundred songs, I’ve truly found my own musical expression which has fallen more under R&B. However, I still believe that my music is a mix of many things that inspire me and my my songs are just me in musical form.
6. What’s your view on the role and function of music as political, cultural, spiritual, and/or social vehicles – and do you try and affront any of these themes in your work, or are you purely interested in music as an expression of technical artistry, personal narrative, and entertainment?
REBECCA SICHON:
I create music because of the joy it brings me and whoever I share it with. Most themes I write about are very much personal and if they touch on social or political subjects, it’s often how it makes ME feel.
7. Do you feel that your music is giving you back just as much fulfillment as the amount of work you are putting into it or are you expecting something more, or different in the future?
REBECCA SICHON:
I am so happy with where I am at on my journey. I’ve been doing this my entire life and have had to process my own expectations with things and better understand the WHY I am doing it. Success will come when it needs to, but for now I am so so thrilled to even have the opportunity to do this!!
8. Could you describe your creative processes? How do usually start, and go about shaping ideas into a completed song? Do you usually start with a tune, a beat, or a narrative in your head? And do you collaborate with others in this process?
REBECCA SICHON:
I love composing melodies so I usually begin with that. I write out a progression with my piano or guitar and then slowly add words that I see fit. I love the creation process and it can absolutely look different each time.
9. What has been the most difficult thing you’ve had to endure in your life or music career so far?
REBECCA SICHON:
My own expectations and understanding of the process! It’s hard to not compare yourself to other artists and can often feel limiting when you start to do so. I am still in the process of overcoming all those feelings and know it may take a lifetime until I can fully know what I am doing!
10. On the contrary, what would you consider a successful, proud or significant point in your life or music career so far?
REBECCA SICHON: I got to go on my first national tour last June and the whole time I could not believe it was happening!! It was so awesome to see Canada and meet so many people from different cities. It definitely felt surreal and rewarding to experience it all. I am so excited to continue to grow in my artistry and see what else I can achieve along the way!
