Fields by Lookout Tower: Album Review
Lookout Tower is a musical act perfecting the art of soul and blues. Their album “Fields” is a collection of dynamic and groovy music representing those genres. Thus, it’s a fantastic cadence to absorb and will resonate with fans on a worldwide scale.
We arrive on southern soil and take in the scent of blues with the opening track I Ain’t Leavin’. Lookout Tower takes us on a trip overflowing with melodic passages, and the path is filled with anthemic vocals guided alongside a smooth guitar. Next up is the title track “Fields,” where this time around the band takes a slower approach to songwriting and harmony. A delta blues-inspired tune is brought up with clean acoustics and a dramatic violin coming on. The result is an evocative song that’ll vibe immensely. “Frozen Ground” brings some essence of jazz to the album with the addition of a brass section. The melody has more of a kick to it, and with a harmonica solo tagging along, the funk train ses off and takes on a ride worth remembering. That very journey lands us on “Late Arrival,” a psychedelic soul instrumental number. Thus, it made me appreciate the band’s genre diversity, and how unique their sound is.
“Très Loin” is one of my favorite pieces of the album. It has a beautiful arrangement where elements of French jazz mixes with slow blues. Aside from that, the narrative feels enriching to hear, just because of the sophistication of the singer’s voice.
