Sussex-based band Down in Motion releases their latest single at the very beginning of the new year. Their latest release, “Into the River,” dynamically energizes as it draws inspiration from various genres. This time, Down in Motion gives us pop-punk, alternative rock, emo, post-hardcore, and indie rock, taking us back to the 90s/ 2000s.
“Into the River” gets us rolling from the onset with thumping drums and Andy’s driving guitars. This immediate sense of energy and anticipation is balanced with a dreamy guitar coming to chime into the verses. With Jaz contributing a melodic bassline, we dig the atmosphere with raw authenticity.
As the song progresses into the choruses, we are treated to a burst of energy with the collision of gritty distortion and pounding instrumentals. Tom’s smooth and soulful vocals, with a gist of twang, are the perfect balance to the high-octane instrumentals. Andy’s vocals are layered into the folds of the energy to get us gushing to the 2000s sound nostalgically. I find their sound drawing parallels to my favorite bands like The Fray and Lifehouse.
I like how they fired up the instrumentals in their latest bop, “Into the River,” and stormed into 2024 with unfiltered emotion to keep themselves authentic and raw. This passion, they embedded in the music. This is how the song doesn’t rely on gimmicks or artificial vitality but rather channels genuine emotions. Tom’s delivery exudes an emo energy, capturing the essence of pop-punk and indie rock with post-punk undertones.
“Into the River” is about the narrator meeting someone they admire by the river and presenting them with a love letter. This theme adds a relatability to the urge and passion in the vocals and instrumentals, enhancing the connection between the music and the emotions, and then also us.
