Chloe & the Brainwaves gets personal with their latest song, “Mind Running Wild.”
The song enchants with riffing and dreamy guitar openings. The beat then kicks in, pulsating with the melodic and expansive guitar. The instrumentals expand to create a lush soundscape. Meanwhile, the vocals are echoing and tender, thick and luscious.
The narrative is poignant as it veers into childhood trauma that survived and followed an adult’s life. Flashing back to the aftermath of these traumatic events and coming back to how alone they are while stigmatized, the raw honesty of Chloe Gardner’s lyrics cuts through as the emotions are brought out vividly with intriguing imagery and symbolism. The lyrics are complemented by a dynamic musical arrangement.
The symbolic reference to wearing socks for days mirrors the enduring pain that survivors carry, often in silence. The repetition of the phrase “mind running wild” highlights the chaotic and intrusive thoughts that can haunt survivors of abuse. The song also suggests that the singer is feeling lost and alone, like a child who has been separated from their caregivers.
She later turns the theme and sings, “You could be anything/You could be anything you want” and “I could be anything/I could be anything I want.” This suggests that the singer is starting to realize that they have the power to heal and create a new life for themselves.
The music propels with producer Steve Grainger, guitarists Michael Potts, Bassist Lewis Cooke and drummer Alex Baker. Gartner gave her hands to the guitar, keys and glockenspiel, thus completing the arrangement.
