Get your spine tingled with SALt’s latest hauntingly beautiful and melancholy single, “Monsters” dedicated to a beloved canine companion who’s crossed the rainbow bridge.
The song opens with soft guitar riffing alongside a gentle piano melody. The drums start with a slow, steady throb, punctuated by sparks of cymbals. As for the shakers, those are actually the cremated remains of their beloved dog, forever a part of their music.
In “Monsters,” Sharon Woods’ high and grainy vocals take center stage. Her voice is a perfect paradox, delicate and vulnerable, yet laced with an eerie sharpness that could cut. Her shivering vibrato hints at the agony mixed with resilient suppressed anger hidden beneath the surface. There couldn’t be a better way to deliver the lyrics. However, the frustration also shows itself a little with the guitars grinding distortedly for a while towards the end. It’s an interesting change.
The chorus pulls out the raw emotion. Woods’ voice soars ethereally and emotionally over the guitars now melodically and anthemically riffing. She portrays the internal struggle: “All the monsters underneath/Making noises on repeat/Hiding in the dark/I could show you so much pain/Innocence will play this game/Hidden in my heart.“
“Monsters” is more or less about the dark thought process we can sometimes have due to anxiety and depression. However, in this case, grief might as well be a big part of it. Nonetheless, SALt shows that even our monsters can become beautiful music with their latest single.
