Vancouver-based, Australian-born artist Meredith Louise gets us slowing down and living life with her nostalgic sophomore EP, Move Slow. With jazz, neo-soul, R&B, and folk combined, you receive a rejuvenating experience from the artist.
The titular and introductory track, “Move Slow” has a snappy rhythm. Louise emerges with a voice, high, tender and tangy, which is surprisingly distinct and pronounced. The backing vocals complement her voice with a tongue-in-cheek soul. Meanwhile, the brass amps up the vibe just as well with a richness in the air.
The artist brings the mood and the joy together in “Take Our Time.” Louise sings contagiously, elevating you out of your everyday blues and relaxing you a little bit with this dancey and catchy number. The bridge lets us up in an ethereal dreamy concoction, thanks to the harmonies.
“Rootbound” gets comfortingly folksy and soothing with a gentle guitar melody flowing underneath the uplifting percussion. Louise’s voice is much more grounded, while light and happy. Understandably so, as the song conveys an engaging narrative about the singer unveiling her potential.
As for “Stay Open,” it opens with a tapping beat while the guitar plays in one ear. It is an introspective groove with a great message of staying open and letting go of whatever is concealed. Closing the EP with “Reverence,” the music gets more nuanced than ever with layers upon layers of grandiosity. The brass blows beneath the organic beats and an intersection of melodies, creating a soulful wall of sound around Louise’s more intriguing delivery.
