Padraic Lang, known by his stage name PlanG, released his latest single, “My Little City,” on April 15. This heartfelt ballad was written by Lang, recorded at FrenchQuarter Studio in Cork City, Ireland, and produced by Lang alongside George Micansky, beautifully captures the bittersweet emotions tied to leaving home for a better life.
“My Little City” opens with a symphony of gentle piano, guitar, and warm organ wails pulling out that nostalgia and warmth. The guitars pluck their way through the song, providing a rustling, steely, glinting flow that brings texture and lightness to the expansive field. The piano’s ripples are soothing and emotionally resonant, with lighter keys occasionally twinkling like stars in the night sky above the sea.
Lang’s vocals touch us with their low, grainy, husky depth, rife with emotion. Every word and line is infused with heartfelt sincerity, drawing us into the story he tells. He sings about the cycle of young people of his city, full of dreams and ambitions, leaving to earn money and see the world, only to return with renewed hope and fulfilled dreams.
The chorus becomes the central point by personifying the city, as Lang sings, “My little city/such a beautiful place/sitting on the sea with a smile in her face/It’s such a pity that people can’t stay/they just go away.”
The saxophone plays loungingly in the bridge to lift us with its jazzy, soulful interlude. The instrumentals evoke the mood and imagery of the depiction and an auditory painting of a place filled with memories and emotions.
Listen to “My Little City” by PlanG to find your heart aching to go home.
