Not Today by Route 500: Review
Birmingham based indie rock project ‘Route 500’ released the second track ‘Not Today’ from their upcoming album recently. ‘Not Today’ is certain to hit a nerve somewhere in you and the band seems to have picked up where they left off with ‘Cartoon’. They have claimed Radiohead to be one of their influences and ‘Not Today’ has all the qualities to be an actual Radiohead composition. The song carries a psychedelic feeling so intense, and Pink Floyd like with a deeper meaning.
‘Not Today’ will entice and absorb you from the first bass note at the start of the song over steady drum beats and a slowly plucked guitar to create an atmosphere where the melancholic vocals could shine. The vocalist sounds like a mixture between David Gilmour and Thom Yorke, two of the greatest vocalists who excelled at this genre. A few unique and melody driven chord changes in the middle enhances the melancholic feeling over which the bittersweet lyrics could thrive. The song gets louder at the end with crisp guitar works like Porcupine Tree or Blackfield. The song has an absorbing feeling that will help you fill up a lot of empty spaces inside you; it is like an empty room with walls full of visuals where you can make peace with yourself.
Route 500 has managed to create a distinct sound beyond their influences and seem very much capable of enriching the works done by Radiohead and Floyd in this genre and ‘Not today’ is just the latest installment in their path to greatness.
