Nashville-based duo thankmelater. burst onto the scene with their debut single, “shutmedown.” Released on April 28th, this electrifying track illustrates the creative vision of vocalist Eric Vattima and guitarist/producer Jacob Redding with a crook to the depths of lifelong struggles.
“shutmedown” shows us what comes out when you spend years writing and refining something. With infectious guitar hooks, pacing rhythms, and emotive lyrics, thankmelater. carves a distinct niche in the alt-indie rock landscape.
From the opening notes and the discursive verses, you couldn’t tell the song would take a turn to rock n roll. What you thought was a calm song was only the build-up of the crescendo with the blast of drums in the chorus. The chemistry between Vattima’s emotive vocals and Redding’s dynamic guitar work is palpable. Redding doesn’t seem to try to keep up, even when Vattima’s vocals are soaring. The guitar work has a sheen to it, which balances the composition as Vattima booms up the mic with his emotions pouring out in a desperate plea for answers.
The lyrics, “Working every night to make a dollar is nothing if you sacrifice your health,” directly attack the horrible workspaces that overwork their employees for little pay. It is a phenomenon that’s quite real, and it will have hustlers and employees jamming this on repeat.
If thankmelater.’s debut single can be this good, we can expect nothing but hitmakers from their coming endeavors. With more experience, their music is going to age like fine wine, and hopefully they are going to sing more for people to connect to. Till then, keep jamming to “shutmedown” by thankmelater. on Spotify or Apple Music.
