Wotts is back with “sinking II”, and let’s just say—it’s a total vibe shift. This Ottawa indie-pop duo, known for their dreamy yet infectious sound, has taken their November 2024 single “sinking” and flipped it on its head. Inspired by the lush soundscapes of Tame Impala and Gorillaz, this remix ditches the twangy guitars for an 80s-style synth-heavy glow-up, packed with shimmering textures, reverb-drenched layers, and a beat that hits like a slow-burning neon fever dream.
From the first note, “sinking II” wraps you in a vaporous, floating atmosphere, like drifting through a midnight cityscape with nothing but flickering streetlights and your own thoughts for company. Then, just as you’re lost in the haze, the beat kicks in—hard. The song pulses and sways, wrapping around you like a warm, melancholic embrace, while Jayem’s voice remains soft, relaxed, and effortlessly cool. It washes over you, seeping into your bones before you even realize you’ve hit repeat.
Lyrically, “sinking II” takes a turn for the bittersweet. While the original was about losing yourself, this version shifts focus to losing others—a reflection of the not-so-great moments the duo faced last year. Lines like “That’s the way that we all go, all go / That’s the way, guess we all fall down” hit differently when backed by swelling synths and cavernous echoes, creating a sound that feels nostalgic yet eerily fresh. It makes you sway, contemplate life, and maybe, just maybe, text that one person you shouldn’t.
With promises of bolder sonic swings in 2025, Wotts is not here to play it safe. Britpop, guitars, and randomness? Count us in. Stay in the loop.
