Glaswegian punk-pop band Spoonr delivers a sharp, energetic critique of modern media with their latest single and fourth track from their upcoming album, “Spinning Wheel,” released on September 13. Produced by Nick Prentice at Media Room in Glasgow, the song taps into the chaos and noise of the information age, blending a punk edge with introspective, witty lyrics.
Opening with driving guitars bustling alongside shimmering instrumentals, “Spinning Wheel” immediately hooks listeners with its high-energy soundscape. The energetic entry comes down to a sweet spot soon after, and the music alternates with fuzzy riffs taking over. Meanwhile, vocalist and bassist’s Dudley’s youthful, emo-tinged vocals bring a swooning, engaging, catchy appeal. In the meantime, his airy yet charged vocal delivery creates an electric sense of connection.
So the anthemic power of the music gets anchored, as he contrasts beautifully against the song’s punky whirlwind of pounding drums and a thickening wall of sound that really makes us listen to whatever he’s saying, no matter how high the instrumentals soar.
Lyrically, “Spinning Wheel” is a biting commentary on the overwhelming nature of media and how it amplifies fear and confusion. Lines like “Spin the wheel, spread the fear” and “Loosen the smile, you must stay at home” seem to allude to the cyclical, almost hypnotic way media feeds crises to the masses.
In “Spinning Wheel,” Spoonr masterfully combines biting social critique with infectious punk energy, setting high expectations for their forthcoming album World B. Stay tuned for the big release in 2025.
