Portland-based indie rock quartet Koalra takes a nostalgic trip back to the ’90s with their latest single, “The Clouds Still Hang On You,” from their upcoming album, Disasterclass. Released like a breath of fresh air, this track encapsulates the essence of ’90s indie rock with a contemporary twist.
The song establishes a dreamy atmosphere, with thumping drums and shimmering guitars. A hazy, low voice emerges like a distant echo, reverberating through the rhythmic propulsion. As the song progresses, the drums become the unwavering heartbeat, providing a consistent force that propels the track forward. The glimmering soundscape envelops the listener, creating a sense of immersion in a sonic fog. The bridge introduces driving melodic guitars. But, the vocal delivery stands out with the low, hazy voice, introspecting. The poetic imagery embedded in lines like “The Clouds Still Hang On You” creates an emotional landscape that listeners can get lost in.
Towards the end, when the drums have long died, the guitar releases into a hazy screech that vibrates through the immersive fog. The gradual fade-out leaves a lingering sense of fleeting beauty, much like the dissipating clouds mentioned in the title.
For fans of the ’90s indie rock scene or those seeking a captivating sonic experience, Koalra’s latest offering, “The Clouds Still Hang On You” is a must-listen.
Two tracks, including “The Clouds Still Hang On You,” are available for preorder from its upcoming album, Disasterclass, at Bandcamp. Upon the release of the album, you get to jam to the rest of the tracks as well.
