Tony lio release a new single ‘Wolfsbane’
Tony Lio is a New Jersey-based alternative-indie rock singer-songwriter. He’s been playing, composing, and recording music for over a decade, specializing in a hybrid type of alternative-grunge rock influenced by Hozier and Tamino with melodic overtones akin to Soundgarden. He’s released a constant stream of music over the previous few years, including six EPs (including 2018’s “LIO,” 2019’s “Aliens” and “Humans,” and 2021’s “LIO II”) and one full-length album (2019’s “The Alien Punk Journal”), each one allowing him to develop his songwriting and performance skills. Lio describes his most recent album, 2022’s “Chaotic Desires,” as a “culmination of experiences that occurred over the preceding two years.”
“Wolfsbane,” one of the EP’s four tracks, is a hard-driving song with elements of harmonic flare in the vocal melody and chorus that wonderfully personifies Lio’s musical style. The song began to take shape in late summer 2021, when Lio finally settled on a theme for it after a time of conceptualization during which Lio was working on a side project that ended abruptly. That theme is the idea of purging the human soul of inner darkness, regardless of how painful it may be. From the first words (“Only lonely days, you smell old grey.”) the lyrics alone demonstrate this concept. You have no feeling after being stung by a scorching sting.)
With a mix male/female vocal from Lio and fellow Indie singer-songwriter Guinnevere Philipp, the song’s pre-chorus shows a clear transition from dark to light in both the music and the words; “Feel the anguish reach down your throat.” You’ve heard of ancient wolfsbane.” “Wolfsbane” has proven to be not just a standout from “Chaotic Desires,” but also a model for what to expect from Lio’s future releases, since he is now working on new material for release later this year and into 2023.
