Universe Moves so Fast by Occurrence: Review

Building the anticipation of their upcoming double album ‘Slow Violence’ which is set to be released on 7 April 2023, the electronic trio Occurrence released a three-track mini EP ‘Universe Moves so Fast’ giving their listeners a peek into what to expect.
The EP starts with the title track ‘Universe Moves so Fast’. It is a song about accepting one’s vulnerability and carrying on regardless of how many times life’s pushed them down in a world that moves too fast. The muffled fuzzy synth melodies and the stubborn vocals give the song a somewhat eerily melancholic vibe that changes to a somewhat inspiring tone towards the end reflecting on the grit and determination that is at the core of the song.
Moving on to the second song, ‘Fudge’ is a bass-heavy sexually charged track. Heavy beats and seductive singing come together to create a brooding tune that’s greeted with an unexpected breakdown halfway through. This sudden turn caught me off-guard.
The mini EP takes another turn and embraces an upbeat tone in the closing song ‘Heels over Head’. It is a charming love song that Hager wrote about when he met Ken. The lyrics and the music reflect the joy of newfound love and this is something almost everyone can relate to making it the most relatable and accessible song in the bunch.
Listening to the three different songs and seeing how versatile they are in their musical arrangement and style, one can predict ‘Slow Violence’ will be a diverse album that won’t shy away from exploring different sounds. I’m looking forward to the full album.
