WILD BO… BY SJ HAWLEY & MAJOR KAMI: EP REVIEW
Major Kami & SJ Hawley’s melodic take on the house and EDM genre are pretty fascinating. The musicians instill various synth pieces that pertain to a techno-thriller, followed by a soothing singer gracing the mic. Their EP entitled “Wild Bo…” is a set of atmospheric tracks that are gritty and insanely catchy. Each song and its respective instrumental rendition have an excellent flow where electro-bass, synthesizers, beats, and even a sultry saxophone makes a greeting!
The EP opens up with the self-titled track, which is a tasty mix of moody basslines and a passionate singer at the helm. It borrows a few tropes from 90s dark pop, especially SJ Hawley’s presence, but all the while maintaining a mysterious element of its own. Coming up next is the ethereal “Smuggle In The Strange”, a techno delight coming in the form of soothing synths and confident Major Kami’s narrative. The songwriting elements are top-notch, and the poetry employs such a powerful dynamic that it’s tough not to get drawn into the melody.
Exiting the EP with “Modern Love” felt like a fitting conclusion. This is where the aforementioned “sultry saxophone” makes an entrance. The track starts off slow with a touching synth piece, and eventually builds up to an epic bass sequence. Paying homage to synthwave and cyberpunk, the song takes this theme and moves forward to a jazzy interlude. Nearing the end of the track, a saxophone solo arises and synergizes with Major Kami for a stunning cadence.
