Oliver Jordan teaches you how to get depressed in his latest EP, Depression Starter Pack. Jokes aside, this EP can help you understand what it is like to be chronically depressed—or even clinically depressed.
The opening track, “Philosopher,” with Jordan’s voice, and growling chants, shows you that you must first follow the philosopher of pessimism, (which he name-drops) Schopenhauer. The lyrics are bleak, questioning the possibility of happiness and the allure of oblivion. The frenetic drums tap into the unease that permeates the mood of the entire EP.
“Death Star” throws us headfirst into a swirling vortex of self-loathing and resentment. The hypnotic vocals and haunting soundscapes portray a war zone where betrayal reigns supreme in his mind.
“Secret 13” makes sailing smoother for us with a jangly guitar and steady beat creating a false sense of security. At least, the lyrics reveal the hollowness beneath. Jordan sings wearily, as if wasted with his voice echoing, of a world gone dark. Yet, there’s a flicker of humanity and solidarity in the line, “To everyone who wants to quit/The world is better with you in it.”
The EP closes with “Cracks.” An immersive soundscape with pulsating drums, and haunting vocals looping through a mesmerizing atmosphere. The lyrics explore the idea of escape, of finding a way to slip out of the cycle of pain through the cracks.
