Doggie Pizza Crust by The Margaret Hooligans: Review
The Margaret Hooligansโ first single of 2023, โDoggie Pizza Crustโ, is punk-rock greatness. The electric ukulele and the crashing drums make for an interesting and powerful composition. However, despite the nostalgic punk singleโs harsh brashness, Crattyโs superb vocals maintain a calming, smooth, and graceful flow throughout the song. The last lyric of the song, in which the lead singer and drummer Strontium warns, in a questionable accent, that you must โnot take crust from poor little doggie,โ is an unusual or rather humorous example of The Margaret Hooligansโ sense of humor, which flows out in their music.
The new song is, like the bandโs previous releases, entertaining, passionate, engaging, and captivating; yet, this time thereโs a fresh idea hiding behind the infectious melody. Simply put, this is simply another silly and fun song by The Margaret Hooligans. The electric ukulele fits in well with the pounding drums in the arrangementโs driving section. Meg Cratty is the main singer and electric ukulele player for The Margaret Hooligans, while Strontium provides rhythm on drums, a teapot, and vocal support. Despite the raw brashness of the nostalgic punk hit, the flow of Crattyโs great voice is calm, smooth, and beautiful. This duo has perfected the skill of combining garage rock, funk, and soul to create a sound that is both reminiscent of and distinct from their inspirations (the Who, James Broen, and more).
The song builds in intensity with the help of distorted guitars and pounding drumming; itโs a lot of fun to listen to and shows off their unique take on garage rock, funk, and soul.
