Village Instincts don’t mince words, and they sure don’t smooth their edges either. The South-born trio has built their identity around sweat, chaos, community, and calling BS when they see it. And with “gentrified!”, they channel that unapologetic authenticity straight into a firecracker of a track that tackles one of modern life’s loudest contradictions: trying to “belong” in a world that keeps pricing people out.
But they don’t come in heavy-handed. Quite the opposite. “gentrified!” starts with a cheeky a cappella line—like a choir that took a wrong turn into a downtown dive bar—before fuzzy guitars crackle to life and the drums slam. Then come the horns, bursting into the mix like a drunk, thick brass tune stumbling into a revolution. It’s chaotic revelry, insanely fun for what it’s worth.
The vocalist, all husky ssmugness and charm, sells every line. “Come on baby, let’s get gentrified,” he teases, fully leaning into the absurdity of the dream: a place to call your own—until someone else gets priced out. Right next, he sings out his sarcastic backhanded apology with backing vocal swooping in, for the punchline: “Sorry you can’t afford the rent!” It’s satire you can shout along to.
The track keeps twisting, because at the bridge, the band unleashes a wild instrumental rollercoaster, with horns blowing from every angle, drums pounding like a street parade gone rogue, and guitars buzzing with righteous mischief. It’s the sound of celebration and protest colliding in the same cramped apartment.
Underneath the humor lies a truth Village Instincts refusing to sugar-coat: the battle for community is real. With “gentrified!”, they prove that calling out the system can still feel like a party—and one everyone’s invited to, whether the landlord likes it or not.
