Heavy Feelings by Lights DC: Review
After spending a long and much-needed break from music, Neil Dixon, the Dublin-based producer is back to treat his listeners with his first piece of new music since 2018, when he remixed the 202’s song “Soul Don’t Boogie”.
The downtempo tune “Heavy Feelings” was produced in partnership with the frontman for the band Sack, Martin McCann. It combines early house elements with the more sinister aspect of 80s electronic music. A melodious fusion of throbbing percussion and midnight synth tones culminates into an expressive vocal lead. There’s a foot-tapping, head-bopping feel to the instrumentals behind the music as well. You could honestly lose yourself, bouncing to the song’s rhythm. It’s a lyrical lament about lofty goals, inaction, and looking back with regret. After one minute of listening to the track, the turn unveils a hook that is completely catchy, is conducive to dancing, and features clanging synths and joyful vocals. The second part of the song “Heavy Feels” features an excellently atmospheric production, which is propelled forward by jangling keys and a laid-back vibe. This is the song’s strongest aspect, and I’m in awe at the quality of production and such masterful skills!
It’s difficult, as a listener, to find flaws in the production of this music because of the artist’s obvious care for and familiarity with the style it aspires to emulate. Overall, Neil Dixon, through his project Lights DC, has created a winning track with “Heavy Feelings” by striking a balance between the gripping melodic intensity and spacey atmospherics.
