Jessie Reyez makes her directorial debut with the music video for her vulnerable new single, “Fraud.”Along with Emme Higgins, the Grammy Award-nominated singer and songwriter directed the video.
With “Fraud,” Jessie Reyez has released her first solo song in two years. It is a vulnerable new track. The song is released through FMLY, Island Records, and Universal Music Canada, along with a music video that features Reyez and Emma Higgins in Reyez’s debut as a filmmaker.
In both the song and the music video for “Fraud,” an unnamed force that draws the singer inexorably back to someone who doesn’t love her the way she loves them tells the story of unrequited love. Reyez accepts vulnerability throughout both as a way to end the vicious cycle of emotion and set herself free once and for all.
In the song, she sings, “And I’m meant to watch you be a better guy / To ladies who don’t understand / What it’s like to stay next to you in f n’ war / When your teammate is your teammate and your adversary too.” But since memories hurt more than falsehoods, I would rather see it through rather than letting you go since a promise is a promise.
In addition to “Apple Juice,” “Shutter Island,” “F k Being Friends,” “Saint Nobody,” “Love in the Dark,” “Before Love Came To Kill Us,” “Blue Ribbon,” “Dear Yessie,” and other songs, Reyez and producer Tim Suby created “Fraud.”
Following the song’s release, Reyez remarked on Twitter, “She’s a 10 but still talks about her ex.” “After this, retiring.”
But once she finishes her support role on Billie Eilish’s Happier Than Ever tour, she does have more music planned, including a new studio album. Reyez replied to a fan by writing, “I am [ready]. For the first time in my career, I’m truly here and happy on tour without crying every day about some nonsense. I’ve also prioritized myself, set limits, and am actually present and focused on what’s in front of me.
