With birds singing, crickets chirping, and the gushing of a stream or waterfall heard in the background, you hear a vulnerable boy with a broken soft voice in the upfront of the prelude of โOut of the Heart of Darkness,โ the third successive album of L.A. Edwards, which released on the 6th of January.
Creating a sensation of being lost in the prelude, the boy says, โIt was in the water/ I couldnโt breatheโฆ.โ L.A. Edwards leads us to understand that the boy ran off or was lured into making an escapade by the black, which he dropped onto.
The second track, โLittle Boy Blue,โ from โOut of the Heart of Darkness,โ furthers the idea of the great escape as he sings in the middle of the first verse, โHey hey, I took the hard way/ Through the middle of nowhere on a great escape.โ
Edwardโs employment of vaporous guitar melodies and a sharp, high voice aid in creating the illusion of space. He has emphasized the contextual space in his music to not only refer to the freedom of getting away but also loneliness and a longing to be with someone. As in the last track, โThe Lucky Oneโ from โOut of the Heart of Darkness,โ L.A. Edwards sings, โThereโs a lonely wind, I hear it blowinโ/ And a stream of tears thatโs overflowinโ,โ representing his mental turmoil.
L.A. Edwards, throughout his album, creates a sensation of surrender with a racing electric guitar progression and drums thrumming in the background, elevating the suspense and the rush to get away.
