Soldier Boy by Mick J Clark: Review
Mick J Clark is a magic man who can tackle anything from pop to soul and R&B to rock ballads embraced in country. In his 4-minute and 7-second single release “Soldier Boy,” he keeps it light-hearted and contemporary with his country-driven delicate singing narrating about a soldier boy.
There’s a marching band type of rhythm to the percussion that carries the song and gives it a whole other dimensional depth. When Mick starts singing about a snippet of his childhood, a conversation between a son and his father about his future ambitions, it touched my heart. What I wouldn’t give to go back to my own moment of self-expression when I thought anything in the world was possible and achievable! I’m sure you would nod with realization when your ears catch the frontal lyrics as well. From a catchy hook evoking the atmospheres of the past, a traditional drum beat comes in. With the backing of cellos and a new tune, the song picks up in the chorus.
With a surprising whistling interlude, the melodies are embedded into my mind, leaving an inch of rhythm that keeps me moving even minutes after the song finishes. This really shows Mick’s expertise, given that he’s written more than 60 songs over the years after learning to play guitar at a very young age and coming out the better end of the tunnel, pursuing a career in music, and committing to craftsmanship, guitar, and singing.
