On their latest and third full-length studio album, “When the Skies Parted,” the trio On a Limb takes you on a ride, unpredictable and opening new doors. Led by pianist and bandleader Andrew Haug, you get six original compositions through the hues of jazz recorded in just four days at Firehouse 12 in New Haven, CT, and masterfully mixed and mastered by legendary producer Dave Darlington.
The album opens with “Know What You Know,” a mesmerizing track that sets the tone for the rest of the record. With its heavy undercurrent and atmospheric vocal textures, the song hypnotizes and supports its euphony with bites.
Moving onto the third track and the single, “Tried to Leave My Demons in Otis” is a lively and catchy number that showcases the band’s penchant for unexpected rises and accelerations. With layered pianos, keyboards, and synthesizers, the song builds to a vibrant, orchestral crescendo that leaves listeners breathless.
“Into the River,” the album’s fifth track, offers a mellow and contemplative respite, with plucking textures that evoke the gentle flow of water. The album culminates with “Song 102,” a dynamic and reflective piece highlighting Haug’s virtuosic piano playing. As the piano melody evolves and shifts, the drumming becomes more pronounced, intensifying the music with wonder and contemplation.
Listen to On a Limb stun the contemporary jazz landscape with “When the Skies Parted” representing the unpredictabilities of life along with our emotional reactions to the changes.
