Who Deserves Balloons and Medals? by Mad Meg: EP Review
The 7-piece EP by Mad Meg called “Who Deserves Balloons and Medals?” is nothing like you’ve ever heard before. I’m serious guys. If you’re ready to take a leap of faith, let me run you down this album.
I need to take a moment to talk about the first and titular self-titled track, which starts off with this play-like spirit. You’ll find everything between advice on tipping your waiter and something about Kiera Knightly (Yeah, you heard that right) in this song. “Monkey Boy” has a very impressive music backdrop, slightly gritty and jazzy rock, sung in a deep macho voice. “Waiters” sounds like it’s from the perspective of a waiter. The throw of the lyrics boasts a peculiar accent if that’s what the vocalist was aiming for, which adds to the entertainment value of this somewhat Pink Panther-like track. I particularly enjoyed the guitar-driven portions and anticipation-building drum work. Compared to its previous numbers, “Beyond Repair” has a completely different energy with an acapella style.
The album proceeds to classic Texan energy, a seductively sung cover of “Jolene”. I personally never imagined listening to a man singing this song ever, so this was quite a surprise. Carrying a similar vibe, “Dildos” is another entertaining number that will have you laughing, cheering, and singing along to its catchy sound! And finally, the album concludes with acoustic guitars plucked for the multi-layered track “Cenotaph No.8”. Of all the days, today’s the day you finally listen to a hilarious, creative, and skillfully conveyed album. I’m sure you’re going to enjoy every second of it!
