Eerie and evocative, “Hoping This is the End” by Lovesick takes us on a holiday and a honeymoon with our loved ones in a despondent and infatuated sort of way.
What makes “Hoping This is the End” so impactful and significant in the message it’s trying to convey is the time it was written and recorded. Lovesick wrote the album at a time when the world felt like it was coming to an end during the pandemic, a time when emotions were more frenetic than ever, and the desire to hold on to them was even more desperate.
The first track of the 9-track album “Blue Skies on Mars” evokes a similar feeling with the lines, “As I look in your eyes, I hope for a Hollywood ending/Blue skies on Mars, and I’m hoping for a sign.” Bringing sci-fi down to the studio, the high-pitched voice of Goolkasian sings in a dreamy buzz of electric guitar and drumming beats, intoxicating the rhythm.
Moving onto “Holiday,” Heather Joy Morgan sings quixotically of wanting to take her partner on holiday “and away from the kitchen stove.” Yet, in unison, the duo sings contradictorily, “When I am with you, I am always home/ Even when we are in Rome.” Together, they create this chemical vibe of exotic love that serves as escapism at its best.
The album pauses with the sonic interlude “Please Hold,” something short of a ringtone and close to an airport alert just 15 seconds long. As we close the album with the last track, “We’ve Been Down This Road,” emanating tranquility with the dreamy guitar play, you can hear the faint vocals of the Italian Greyhound puppy Gozimo.
If you are trying to take a break from the daily monotony, “Hoping This is the End” by Lovesick might be the sonic equivalent of your tropical escape.
